An Introduction to Cellular Technology


Cellular technology has been advancing ever since its invention. Today, most devices run on wireless modes. The transceivers or base stations capture radio signals transmitted by mobile phones while communicating. The radio signals are then re-transmitted to the subsequent cells at other frequencies until a connection with the targetted mobile phone is established.  


Types of Cellular Network-

GSM: It is an acronym for Global System for Mobile Communications. GSM authenticates SIM cards, meaning users can simply switch SIM cards to get a new network. It is based on time division meaning calls take turns using radio frequencies. There have been many generation rollouts of GSM technology initiating with 1G. In most parts of the world, 4G technology is currently predominant.

CDMA: It stands for code-division multiple access. The working principle of CDMA is encoding connections with various keys and decoding them on the receiving end to establish contact without interferences. CDMA authenticates the mobile set; hence the phone needs to be switched to get on another network. It has a great range in rural areas with primarily used in the United States. The leading CDMA carriers in the US are Verizon and Sprint. Traditionally, CDMA did not support calling and data usage simultaneously, but the technology has evolved since its origin.

LTE: It is also called 4G LTE (Long-Term Evolution). It is an upgraded version of GSM and CDMA. GSM provides increased bandwidth for voice and data communications. 

VoLTE: It works on the LTE data connection and is the latest voice technology worldwide. It enables video calls with high voice quality.
